Also, I can personally corroborate his observation that pain correlates with age. Apparently irrational government seems slightly more explicable when you consider that most leaders and lawmakers are old, achy-cranky, and probably taking exogenous opioids at least some of the time (because most non-opioid analgesics, used constantly, eventually trash the kidneys and/or liver—violating rule no. 1).
I agree with what Mr. Stross has learned, and the resulting rules. 1/ Don't die. 2/ Idiots are everywhere: fixing their idiocy is not your problem. 3/ Do not do unto others that which would be repugnant were it done unto you.
Although I am only a casual fan, not a Fan—I can appreciate wisdom from the Great Maker. And this piece is an apt metaphor for all of society, whether or not it was intended (I assume it was, because... Great Maker).
Actions speak louder than words, although participation in social media is becoming crucial aspect of applying for jobs and launching one’s career, so if you’re the all-action type that cringes at the idea of self-promotion, well then you’d better start applying for blacksmithing apprenticeships, because your notion of accomplishment is so quaint as to actually be medieval. But at the same time, if you spend every hour of every day curating your dumb Tumblr, you’re never going to develop any actual skills and will eventually be exposed for the fraud you really are, your abundance of Twitter followers only serving to make your breakdown even more public and shameful.
