Oct. 18th, 2014 02:19 pmI agree with what Mr. Stross has learned, and the resulting rules. 1/ Don't die. 2/ Idiots are everywhere: fixing their idiocy is not your problem. 3/ Do not do unto others that which would be repugnant were it done unto you.
Also, I can personally corroborate his observation that pain correlates with age. Apparently irrational government seems slightly more explicable when you consider that most leaders and lawmakers are old, achy-cranky, and probably taking exogenous opioids at least some of the time (because most non-opioid analgesics, used constantly, eventually trash the kidneys and/or liver—violating rule no. 1).
Although I am only a casual fan, not a Fan—I can appreciate wisdom from the Great Maker. And this piece is an apt metaphor for all of society, whether or not it was intended (I assume it was, because... Great Maker).
